The reasons why:

  • We focus on storytelling and making connections between writing forms and new media.

  • We employ technology to develop or enhance measurable skills.

  • We are mindful consumers and producers of technology.

  • We maximize collaboration inside and outside the school.

  • We must be flexible and patient.

STARTING WITH STORYTELLING IN MIND

  • The purpose of storytelling is to communicate a personal reflection on the topic. Remind your students to start with the end in mind - what are they trying to say - rather than how

  • once the concept they wish to communicate is clear in their mind, they can explore how to showcase it

MINDFUL TECHNOLOGY USE

  • Tools come in varied degrees of difficulty; our students come with variable educational technology skills (typing, online research, etc) as well as mulimedia skills. Choose approachable tools so that the focus is not the tools, but the content expressed through it.

COLLABORATION AND COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

  • Student collaboration on storytelling projects is conducive to content understanding

FLEXIBILITY AND TROUBLESHOOTING

  • New tools, apps, and websites constantly emerge. Teaching digital literacies and storytelling requires us educators to consider what is possible and also compare competing instructional tools.

  • offline drafting

  • taking stock photo vs online stock resources

Digital Storytelling in Education

As student ASSIGNMENT

When assigned to students as assignment, students may be first asked to research a topic and then choose a particular point of viewas they learn to use the library and the Internet to research rich, deep content while analyzing and synthesizing a wide range of content. Students who participate in the creation of digital stories may develop enhanced communications skills by learning to organize their ideas, ask questions, express opinions, and construct narratives. It also can help students as they learn to create stories for an audience, and present their ideas and knowledge in an individual and meaningful way

For DELIVERY of content

Teachers can use Digital Storytelling as a way to facilitate discussion about the topics presented a story and as a way of making abstract or conceptual content more understandable. Research has shown that the use of multimedia in teaching helps students retain new information as well as aids in the comprehension of difficult material.
